lactation room

My university just established a lactation room in my building. It's certainly not convenient for everyone in the (very very large) university, but it's a start. And not a bad place to start--the English department has been producing babies at an astounding rate lately.

Indeed, this is FABULOUS news! Although, an office-mate of mine heard the title of the room and thought it sounded too "medical". She pictured a clean, sterile, room with metal equipment for "milking"....I think she may be right, so why don't we ponder some other name options: the Nursing Nook, the Breastfeeding Bar, the Lactation Lounge, or my personal favorite - The Milking Spot....Just some silliness for the holidays!

Based on the description, it sounds like it's intended more for pumping than for nursing--which is cool, b/c pumping in public is a far different scenario than nursing, I think. But I agree with Academama that it needs a friendlier name. Maybe The Milky Way? (I do love that candy bar, after all)

My school had a lactation room that I didn't know about until halfway through my first semester following baby's arrival. I was so excited to use it for pumping (which I had been doing noisily in restrooms to the probable horror of undergrads) until I realized that there was another mama who was there every time I needed to use it. Grr.

HURRAH! This is a really good step for your university to take, and I am thrilled for you.

I had to pump in my cube at work (since I had defended and graduated by then) for the 12 months I worked and pumped. . . NOT IDEAL. :-)

This is wonderful. I have been lucky enough to have a private office with a locking door and a sink only two rooms away. For those moms out there who have pumped in public restrooms all I can say is that you are truly amazing! That is dedication!

I also noticed that the email implied that the primary purpose of the room was pumping & storing milk, not for breastfeeding actual babies. Oh well! Babies are meant to visit the building occasionally, and I guess no one wants to encourage them to be a permanent fixture! (One day I was asked by a woman in the elevator if my baby & I were "visiting" and I said no, holding office hours.) And yet I relish being able to bring my little one around with me--not like other professions, which would strictly forbid them! Sorry for straying off topic a bit!
